Soultearoa Shakedown Issue #9: Summer 2015/2016
Summer's coming - so it's time for another issue of the official fanzine of the NZ Soul All Dayer!
Issue #9 features all Aotearoa content, with the usual array of Top 5 lists from some of our favourite local artists, DJs, musicians and creatives nestled alongside a handful of longer pieces, contributed by Murray Cammick, Simon Grigg, Sam Hill, Pete Nice, Damian McGregor and Gene Rivers.
There are most certainly physical copies available, so just reach out at nzsoulalldayer@gmail.com or click one of the links on this page to check out the digital reproduction (and all of our back issues!) of the folding booklet lovingly assembled to coincide with our most soulful summer series of shows yet!
We'll be announcing the summer shows right here on this blog, and also on the NZ Soul All Dayer facebook and instagram pages. If you haven't followed us yet, please do!
We hope you enjoy reading this fanzine as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you.
And remember - soul music's not a genre, it's a feeling!

NZ Soul All Dayer Wellington
The NZ Soul All Dayer kicks off the summer with our first ever Wellington edition!
A quartet of NZ Soul All Dayer resident DJs are joining a host of Wellington’s most soulful DJs at Laundry Cuba Street for an all day, all vinyl throwdown and celebration of soul, bringing together like-minded lovers of real soul music while replicating the feelgood vibe and inclusive spirit of the original All Dayers from the UK.
Beginning in the early afternoon, over the course of twelve-plus hours this stack of hand-picked DJs reach deep into their crates to play the many shades of soul music, from classic soul, rare groove, funk and boogie, to northern soul, proper disco and much, much more besides.
Repping for Auckland and the Bay Of Plenty:
Selecta Sam / Nyntee / Kirk James / Campbell Ngata
And on Team Wellington:
Omega B / Ayesha / Melfunction / Ian Footitt / Chung / Mikki Dee / Dunc Tha Funk / B-Lo
There’ll be the usual array of excellent refreshments and delicious food delivered all day long from the fine folks of Laundry Cuba Street; and, as is our way, we’ll also be giving away free copies of the ‘Soultearoa Shakedown’ fanzine, selling exclusive Soul Tiki merchandise as well as playing more great soul and funk music than you can shake a jandal at.
For more info check out the event page on facebook right here.
And remember: SOUL MUSIC'S NOT A GENRE - IT'S A FEELING!

NZ Soul All Dayer #8: All Nighter Edition
It can get a lil' chilly in Tamaki-Makarau during July, so Aotearoa's most soulful party is returning to warm you up with a double dose of feelgood flavours!
We kick off at 4pm on Friday afternoon in the Britomart Country Club and enjoy a live solo set from Isaac Aesili (Sorceress, Latinaoteara) plus DJ support from the Soultearoa Crew, before heading across the alley and downstairs to the 1885 Basement to carry on until the wee hours, while listening to the Soultearoa DJs, and our favourite Wellingtonians, Chocolate Box Deluxe (vocalists Lisa Tomlins (Lord Echo, Trinityroots) and Vanessa Stacey (Electric Wire Hustle, The Bones) and DJ Ayesha (Bella Kalolo)).
NZ Soul All Dayer, from 4pm-midnight, at Britomart Country Club
Isaac Aesili (live solo set)
Gene Rivers / Nyntee / Selecta Sam / Jay Jeffrey / Kirk James / Campbell Ngata / Scott 'Doughboy' Towers / Kirsty Hargreaves / DJ Rose Alice / Omega B / DJ Ayesha / Pete Nice / Sweetpants
NZ Soul All Nighter, from 10pm-4am, at 1885 Basement
Chocolate Box Deluxe (Wgtn) (live)
Gene Rivers / Nyntee / Selecta Sam / Jay Jeffrey / Kirk James / Campbell Ngata / Scott 'Dougboy' Towers / Kirsty Hargreaves / DJ Rose Alice / Omega B / DJ Ayesha / Pete Nice / Sweetpants
An all day (and night!) celebration of soul music, the purpose of the NZ Soul All Dayer is to bring together like-minded lovers of real soul music while replicating the hedonistic vibe and spirit of the original Soul All Dayers and All Nighters from the UK.
Our events begin in the early afternoon, and over the course of twelve hours a stack of hand-picked local DJs reach deep into their crates to play many of the shades of soul music, from classic soul, rare groove, funk and boogie, to northern soul, proper disco and much, much more besides.
As is our way, we'll be giving away free copies of the Soultearoa Shakedown fanzine (including exclusive content from around the world!), screening classic soul and Blaxploitation movies throughout the day, selling 'Soul Tiki' merchandise and playing more good music than you can shake a tailfeather at.
